Marcus is currently a PhD candidate at Brown University in the Department of Music studying musicology and ethnomusicology. He focuses his research on the music related to Black American freedom struggles and protest. His dissertation examines the music of 2020 Black Lives Matter and how it was produced on social media. Marcus’s article on the artistry and performance politics of singer Abbey Lincoln was recently published in the Journal for Jazz Studies and is available in the link below.
